CHILD ORTHODONTICS

Early intervention
care for children

Sometimes early intervention can make all the difference in the health of your child’s smile. Early treatment can stop orthodontic issues in their tracks and reduce the need for complex treatments in the teenage years.

At what age should
my child see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children be seen by an orthodontist around age 7. At this age, your orthodontist can detect developmental issues in the teeth and jaws. If caught early, the orthodontist can prevent these problems from worsening.

Not all children will need to start treatment right at age 7, but we can monitor the growth of your child’s smile and intervene at the opportune time.

Signs your child may need early interventive care

Not all signs of orthodontic need are obvious, which is why it’s important to bring your child in for a consultation. But there are a few signs you can look out for that present a clear need for orthodontic intervention. These signs include:

  • Trouble chewing
  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Bruxism (grinding)
  • Mouth breathing
  • Thumb sucking after age 5
  • Speech impediments
  • Crooked or protruding teeth
  • Large gaps or spacing issues
  • Crowded teeth
  • Top teeth that protrude far in front of lower teeth
  • Top teeth that are hidden behind the lower teeth
  • Teeth that cross over each other on the top and bottom jaws

intervention options
